Missionaries of the Assumption

April 1, 1989 saw the birthing of the Missionaries of the Assumption in Davao City, Philippines. The new community started with twenty-nine Sisters who were formerly members of the Daughters of Mary of the Assumption (fma) a congregation founded in 1922 by Archbishop Louis Joseph Arthur Melanson in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Canada.

The Sister's awareness and experience of the poor, especially in the country have challenged us to discover new meanings and insight into our Charism. Our increasing desire to respond more openly and creatively to the varying conditions and needs of the People of God in today's world eventually led to refounding a new community with specifically missionary character. Thus, the name, Missionaries of the Assumption.

Our charism spell out in the following articulation: "We the Missionaries of the Assumption, are called to witness to the incarnate Christ's option for the poor, through active participation in the Church's works of evangelization. In fidelity to the Church and inspired by Mary's Assumption, we live this out with hope and joy."

Our life of Prayer, Mission Apostolate and Community life, lived out in hope, love and service, enables us to continue the prophetic mission of Jesus Christ. Inspired by the same apostolic goal and aspirations, the Sisters have bonded together in order to participate more actively in Christ's mission in the Church and in the world.

The twenty-nine Sisters are the founding group and Archbishop Antonio LI. Mabutas of the Archdiocese of Davao is our canonical founder. Our inspirational founder is Archbishop Louis Arthur Melanson whose missionary zeal and dedication to work for the poor and the deprived has inspired us to become missionaries of th poor today.

We have opted to be a Society of Apostolic Life in the Church. This being so, we commit ourselves to live in community. As an apostolic community, we are open to discern and participate in the apostolic activities that bring us into solidarity with the poor in their struggle for justic, full life and total human liberation, and to participate in the missionary works that bring about the restoration of harmony and balance in the life systems of the Mother Earth. Presently, our Vision and Mission are concretised in the following apostolates: Indigenous Peoples, Health, Women and Children, Parish Work, School and conducting retreats, seminars and Growth Sessions. We arrived in Solomon Islands in 1994. Since then we have help in the Sunday School Program of the Archdiocese of Honiara. The Sisters are now at Nazareth Apostolic Centre, Tenaru, Family Life Apostolate of the Archdiocese and Women Apostolate in Wainoni Bay, Makira Province.
